Les revues constituent un moyen privilégié pour étudier les représentations que dresse une société d’elle-même. Ainsi, au Québec, avec le début de la querelle entre les régionalistes et les exotiques, opposant initialement L’Action française (1917) au Nigog (1918), un siècle de modernité s’ouvre pour les revues intellectuelles québécoises. Elles tournent alors la page sur l’âge prémoderne, revendiquent l’autonomie intellectuelle et se différencient, selon les registres et les spécialités, entre revues d’idées, artistique et savante (Fortin, 2006).

Des études fouillées ont déjà enrichi notre connaissance de certaines revues-phares, de leurs réseaux et de leurs idéologies. Le colloque « La modernité en revues » veut pousser plus loin ces explorations en invitant les chercheur·e·s en littérature, humanités et sciences sociales à venir présenter leurs travaux touchant au vaste corpus des revues québécoises des cent dernières années. Nous cherchons à comprendre le rôle primordial des périodiques et de la presse dans la structuration générale de la vie intellectuelle québécoise (Lamonde, Bergeron, Lacroix et Livernois, 2017 ; Cambron, Côté et Gagnon, 2018).

The title of the 2019 American Indian Workshop “Indigenous economies: sustenance, sustainability and sovereignty” is based on the assumption that Indigenous economic practices should be seen as part of a holistic approach to life, well-being, culture and the environment. At the same time, with the gradual undermining of tribal sovereignty by European settlers, these practices have been reshaped by colonial and capitalist forces, and the subsequent resistance to them. Thus, the organizers of the 2019 AIW wish to provide a platform to explore the broadly-defined issue of Indigenous economies, and particularly to look at how the relationship between sustenance, sustainability and sovereignty was reflected in economic practices and lifeways of the past, and how it is perceived and practiced today.

Indigenous populations in North America are often quoted as some of the poorest and unhealthiest groups in their respective countries. These statistics can be attributed to colonial history and decades of hegemonic policy toward them – removal from and eventual loss of their traditional lands, relocation to reservations, forced assimilation, intense agricultural production, the resulting inability to practice subsistence farming, cultivate traditional foodways, reliance on nutrient-poor governmental food subsidies, and the continuing pollution of reservation lands and waters by oil and mining companies. Poverty is at the same time an effect of the misguided policies, and a major cause of many health problems. Although subjected to different rules and regulations, the Métis and Inuit populations in Canada too face some of the same challenges as First Nations communities in Canada. The organizers would like to analyze how Indigenous communities and individuals are countering the negative effects of political and economic oppression by both resorting to tribal knowledges and practices, and taking advantage of modern economic instruments.

Thanks to the generosity of the Law Futures Centre at Griffith University, the Association for Canadian Studies in Australia and New Zealand (ACSANZ) invites emerging scholars to a one-day symposium on Canadian Studies.

This symposium seeks to bring together emerging scholars—whether undergraduate or graduate students or early career researchers—to present their work and to engage in larger discussions about the state of global Canadian Studies. No single question will drive the symposium; rather, we hope that participants will use it as an opportunity to speak to how their research engages the study of Canada, and what they see as the futures of the field(s).

Participants will also have opportunities to discuss funding and publishing opportunities, and to develop new networks.

Presentations are invited on any aspect of the study of Canada, including, but not limited to, Indigenous Studies, literature, law, politics, international relations, language, history, Cultural Studies, the creative arts, and sociology. Contributions from across disciplines, including those taking comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, are welcomed.

The generous support of the Law Futures Centre at Griffith University means that attendance at the symposium will be without cost to participants. ACSANZ will also offer three $350 AUD stipends to participants travelling from outside southern Queensland. Stipends will be awarded by the organising committee based on the merit of the accepted abstracts.

Cette séance aura lieu dans le cadre des Cercles de conversation 2019 de l’Association des littératures canadiennes et québécoises (ALCQ). Du 1er au 3 juin 2019, à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique, à Vancouver.

Cette séance souhaite se pencher sur les rapports entre l’espace et les personnages, triplement marqués qu’ils sont par leur identité sexuelle, de genre, puis leur orientation sexuelle dans les œuvres contemporaines (2000 à nos jours). À l’interface de ces deux éléments, la sexualité apparait comme le motif privilégié pour saisir les dynamiques de pouvoir. Sans compter que ces identités de sexe/genre/désir sont redoublées d’autres aspects : âge, classe sociale, appartenance ethnique et religieuse. Le partage des lieux est toujours négocié en fonction de ces différents marqueurs, qui viennent pondérer l’identité, lui conférant plus ou moins de valeur, plus ou moins de pouvoir.

L’espace porte-t-il toujours les marques du genre? Celles-ci sont-elles modulées par des dynamiques intersectionnelles, et si oui, comment? Et qu’en est-il des identités sexuelles/de genre émergentes et minoritaires (LGBTQI+) ? Dans quels espaces ont lieu les rapports sexuels? Comment le corps s’y inscrit-il? À qui appartiennent ces espaces ? Enfin, quelles associations symboliques, quelles stratégies narratives, énonciatives et rhétoriques nous informent de ces dynamiques de pouvoir?
