The Graz International Summer School Seggau is designed for internationally oriented, highly motivated students from all disciplines, who wish to deepen their understanding of current European and international affairs by studying and discussing global developments and challenges within the context of transformation processes and demographic change reflecting aspects of individual, social, political, religious, cultural, literary, regional, economic, cohort and national identities.

17th Biennial Conference of the Association of Italian Canadian Writers (AICW), University of Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 7 – 9, 2018

The Association of Italian Canadian Writers (AICW), in collaboration with Italian Studies in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Winnipeg, is accepting proposals for its 17th Biennial Conference to be held at the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 7 – 9, 2018. The conference invites academic papers, literary readings (poetry, prose or plays) and artistic works in Italian-Canadian literature and culture that engage with themes of heritage, passages and appreciation. Writers and artists, academics and researchers from all disciplines are encouraged to submit proposals to present new (or posthumous) creative or critical works in Italian, English or French. Graduate students and emerging writers are encouraged to participate.

Si le mariage n’officialise plus vraiment le passage de la mademoiselle à la madame, le changement n’en survient pas moins peu à peu, signe qu’on entre désormais dans la catégorie des mères, des travailleuses, des femmes rangées dont le sort est à peu près figé. Tiqqun a élaboré toute une théorie autour de la jeune fille comme modèle de la société de consommation, figure de fascination érigée en alliée des publicitaires. Son aînée, la madame, vache à lait des centres d’achats, est aussi un modèle en son genre. L’image est connue : la madame aura de bonnes manières, tiendra maison et portera Neige de Lise Watier. Elle a son pendant grotesque : la « p’tite madame », un peu confuse et fermement agrippée à sa sacoche, recherchera l’aide de quelque monsieur pour s’orienter au garage ou à la quincaillerie. Leur consoeur la matante, autre figure de femme vieillissante, fait à elle seule basculer le Québec dans le quétaine en raison de son amour démesuré des téléromans et de Céline Dion. Si elle aime la culture, ce n’est jamais la bonne, ce qui la rend encore plus ridicule que son mononcle de mari. Mais n’y a-t-il pas possibilité de réhabiliter la madame ? De montrer son envers, ce qui se cache derrière sa façade, ce que ses préoccupations ont de pertinent, d’intéressant, et pourquoi pas, de punk, de fou, de too much ? Que faut-il pour être une madame ? Peut-on aussi refuser de le devenir ? Et que peut nous apprendre la matante, ou la tante tout court, de celle qui sert à décrire les hommes trop efféminés comme celle qui fait des becs en pincette ? À travers les figures mal-aimées de la madame, de la p’tite madame et de la matante, questionnons les rôles sociaux auxquels on destine les femmes dès que leur prime jeunesse est derrière, ceux que la société comme leurs proches attendent qu’elles jouent, pour bousculer les scénarios habituels ou, pourquoi pas, en imposer de nouveaux.

International Conference, January 25 – 26 2019, Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena

In 1993, David Foster Wallace called for a new generation of sincere literary rebels who would be “willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the ‘How banal’.” If the logical conclusion of postmodern irony had been apathy and solipsism, Wallace argued, writers now had to find different ways of self-expression. This revaluation of sincerity struck a nerve. Its repercussions were not just limited to the domain of literature, however. In varying forms, sincerity has also become a trending aesthetics in music, film, and visual art. This cultural movement has come to be called the New Sincerity. It is characterized by a yearning for interpersonal connection, affect, trust, and belief. Despite poststructural proclamations of the “Death of the Author,” the New Sincerity reframes the artwork as a medium of communication between artists and their audiences.

Our conference brings a transdisciplinary approach to the New Sincerity movement. We would like to discuss not only what the New Sincerity stands for, but also what conceptual foundations it is built on. Why did sincerity emerge as an alternative to postmodern conventions of representation? How does the history of the concept influence its present use? Are there different understandings of sincerity at work in the New Sincerity? Is the movement still productive? Can we agree on a canon of works, or a canon of ideas? Last but not least, we intend to inquire how the New Sincerity is embedded into a specifically North American social and political context.
